Leadership Institute for 2009 Georgia STAR Teachers

Purpose

The PAGE Leadership Institute for Georgia’s STAR (Student Teacher Achievement Recognition) Teachers is designed to promote, advance and build upon the skills of teacher leaders throughout Georgia. This leadership institute is an investment in the more than 460 STAR Teacher recipients and will provide these teachers with opportunities to learn how they can lead and become influential advocates for quality education in their respective schools.  Click here for brochure.

Program Format

The PAGE Leadership Institute for 2009 STAR Teachers provides two, one-day, high quality professional learning sessions focusing on significant and relevant topics that build upon leadership skills of the STAR Teachers in Georgia.  Each session is offered in regional locations on subsequent days and presented by the same national expert or consultant. 

The institute is FREE for all Georgia 2009 STAR Teachers and includes breakfast, lunch and professional materials for use in the classroom.  Schools must provide release time for STAR Teacher of the Year to attend. STAR Teachers may earn 1 PLU credit for participation and completion of this leadership institute

Goals

The goals for this two-part  program are based on the best selling book, Schooling by Design by Grant Wiggins and Jay McTighe (ASCD, 2007):

• Provide a practical and thought provoking look at how the principles of learning influence our practices.
• Empower the teachers with ways in which "backward design" can enhance both curriculum and school improvemet planning.
• Develop skills to construct a more coherent curriculum and make assessment a "photo album, not a snapshot."

RSVP

2009 STAR Teachers will receive notification of this valuable training and must RSVP to the PAGE office to be included in the scheduled training.  Because financial commitments must be made to presenters, to host institutions regarding space and food, and to order adequate materials, it is recommended that STAR Teachers RSVP as soon as possible to Dr. Diane Ray dray@pageinc.org.

About the PAGE STAR Program

The Student Teacher Achievement Recognition (STAR) program was created to recognize Georgia’s outstanding high school seniors and the teachers who have been most instrumental in their academic development. Perhaps the best-known recognition program in the state for high school students and teachers, STAR helps to identify and cultivate Georgia’s future leaders. State sponsors of the program include the Professional Association of Georgia Educators (PAGE) and the PAGE Foundation, the Georgia Chamber of Commerce and the Georgia Department of Education.
