Special Statement Regarding 2009 Fall Conference

PAGE Will Suspend Fall Conference This Year (Released 8/5/09)

The current economic crisis facing Georgia’s public schools has meant teacher furloughs and severe cuts to budgets, making travel to education conferences very difficult. Indeed, many systems have adopted a “no travel” policy as a part of their overall cost cutting measures. Given the financial difficulties our colleagues across the state are facing, PAGE leaders believe that the prudent course will be to suspend this fall’s conference scheduled for November 6-8 in Savannah.

Over the past several years, PAGE has developed a comprehensive and highly regarded program of Professional Learning for educators which includes educational institutes on a variety of topics intended for specific audiences, the Teacher Academy which supports promising novice teachers, and programs supporting teaching excellence for STAR Teachers and Teachers of the Year. PAGE’s High School Re-Design Initiative is now active in almost two dozen schools in several county and local systems across the state. All of those programs will continue this school year as our colleagues need professional support now more than ever.

“We are working very diligently at the classroom, school and system level to provide professional learning opportunities for our members and educator colleagues across the state,” said PAGE Executive Director Allene Magill. “Those efforts will be undiminished this school year. However, in assessing the impact of the budget cuts on local schools, we decided to focus on the quality of our specific programs and the cost-efficient way that we can deliver those opportunities around the state rather than ask districts to send individuals and teams to a statewide conference – an expense that most can ill-afford.”
